May's Landscaping Tips

Landscaping ideas for your yard are cheap, easy, and guaranteed to turn heads.

A Hooper For Your Yard

For many years, the landscape tool (or landscaping tool as it’s also known) has been one of, if not the most important, additions to any serious gardener’s house. Back, in the old days before electricity and the mini Farmer in a Suit, hoeing, cutting, and digging were main staples of your landscape arsenal. Back then you couldn’t go outdoors without bringing along your trusty hoe and spade. But with modern living and the abundance of gadgets, gardening tools have become more of a decorative piece than anything else… or at least that is the case when we’re talking about the ones you see in the front yard. Before I tell you what I’m going to share with you about landscape tools, let me give you a little history lesson.

The earliest garden tools were simple and basic: A spade, a hoe, a shovel, and a weed eater. Once, one of our favorite and time saving hobbies was to prepare or build the soil in an attempt to lay down a nice garden with a pretty flower bed. That all changed when we discovered the ease and enjoyment, we could have by using the new landscaping tools: The Hula-Ho, or more commonly known as the Hula-Ho! Who would have thought that something so simple as a two handed push broom, could be such a time saver and beautify the lives of so many.

The first hula hoe weeder was created in Japan. This simple tool was designed to do one thing: Weeding. This humble tool, would prove to be one of, if not the most useful invention in the history of gardening! While weeds can be a pain in the butt, the use of a weeder is a must for most gardens. Not only do they remove weeds and grass from your sight, but they also remove pests and unwanted animals from your property.

A hula hoe weeder, (also known as a heat treated hula hoop) has two handles, one long and one short. To use simply place your hand between the handles and start rotating the tool, much like the circular motion of a vase. To remove weeds from your lawn simply flip the handle and move the vine to remove unwanted plants and weeds.

As far as tools like these go, there are many out on the market today, some of which are certainly worth having and others that are absolutely worthless! I’ve found that the tools like the hula hoe are really worth their weight in gold. I can’t say I’ve ever used a weed eater that didn’t work, or a spade that wouldn’t hold up, or any other piece of equipment I probably could have used when I was a kid (if I had them, that is). Most are also very sturdy and can take a real beating.

If you’re going to buy one of these tools, make sure you get one that is made from metal. There are a few reasons for this, and I’ll mention a couple of them. First of all, stainless steel will rust extremely quickly if it comes into contact with water, which is what you’ll be doing most of the time when you’re cultivating your garden. Second of all, they’re just generally more durable. Copper, brass, and aluminum are all good metals to use when buying a hula hoop, although I wouldn’t recommend using them for anything heavy.

Of course, I’ve seen some great hula hoe machines that are made of plastic. If you’re looking for something cheap and easy to maintain then plastic is fine. But I would personally stay away from these, as I can easily see them breaking after only a few uses. I’m talking about the kind of plastic that holds the blades in place and doesn’t allow you to slide the hoop through it. These usually come with plastic blades, but the plastic itself won’t last very long.

In conclusion, a hula Hooper is an essential tool for anyone who wants to grow their own garden. They make your job a lot easier and will save you a lot of time in the long run. Just remember not to get one that’s too large for your garden, and always keep it clean. This way you can enjoy it for years to come. Happy planting!
